as a teen, i have a rather different POV on this topic. i would much rather take the risk than spend my entire teenhood enclosed in the 'bubble of protection' that my parents have made for me. surely, if something happend to me i would definitely regret it, but if i never get out there and i never have any freedom as a teen i would regret it as well. if something happened i can always recover. but if i waste my entire childhood and teenhood can i ever go back?

Outside the norm always exists, even with people born with physical impairments, retardation, etc. it would be safe to say many who walk the earth have a wide variety of mental impairments that are not noticable to the eye. I am a firm believer that some people can be born "bad", what is bad? To me, it is a child who is a habitual liar, selfish, always playing victim, sneaky, calculating in a negative way, etc etc. Most of all, I believe most have something to do with factors regarding upbringing but more importantly I also believe a percentage exist who are simply born that way. Therapy will never help, it would be like telling water it should not be wet.

It's very difficult to get the balance, trying to ensure your child is streetwise enough to survive teenage years, yet ensuring they are safe.

I walked my daughter to school till she was 8, and then untill she was 10 walked her to the busy road, and ensured she had crossed it.

She's 11, nearly 12 now and mum taking her to school is "uncool"

Times have certainly chaned, for the worse unfortunatly.

I'm dreading the time when I do actually have to let them out by themselves - I suppose I can't keep them captive in the house forever ;)

I was the same, I could play out all day with friends and this time of year when the sun isn't going down til pretty late, I could even play out until well into the evening. I'd have probably also been allowed to walk to and from school except my disability wouldn't allow it.

Today, I've got a younger brother who is 7 and he's allowed to play outside, but he's not allowed to move from outside the front of the house and one of us has to keep an eye on him at all times (its usually me as from my bedroom window I can see right down both ends of the street as I have a big bay window!

Exactly.

They are urging us to allow our children more freedom, but in the next breath if I did allow my children more freedom and something did happen to them I would be branded an irresponsible parent.

Perhaps they ought to look at harsher penalties for crimes against children?

Yes I know, when I was younger say 20 years or so ago, I was allowed to play out all day with friends and I always walked to school alone.

It's a terrible shame, but you just can't take the risk when you are talking about children.

if the government applied the usual rigorous health and safety checks to child rearing as they do to factories, they would certainly agree with you.
you are right - the world is a more dangerous place and why would you take risks with your own child?
